Introduction

There is a particular kind of darkness that comes not from what we have lost, but from our inability to let it go. For Northern Irish death/doom trio THE CRAWLING, that contradiction lies at the heart of What We Leave Behind, a two-track EP released on 2 October 2026 through Grindscene Records. Its lead single, “A Song to Nurse the Sickness,” turns crushing heaviness and bleak atmosphere toward a deeply human struggle: accepting that the past is behind us.

Artist background

Formed in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, in 2014, THE CRAWLING have developed a distinctive identity within the death/doom underground. Their music is built on crushing riffs, guttural vocals and an enduring fixation on loss, isolation and melancholy. The line-up features Andy Clarke on guitar and vocals, Adrien Crozet on bass and Ant Deane on drums. Across three studio albums, the band has continued to explore darker aspects of human experience, and its live appearances include Bloodstock Open Air, Inferno Metal Festival, Incineration Festival, MetalDays and Siege of Limerick. The band has also received an exclusive stream through Metal Hammer UK.

Review of the song

“A Song to Nurse the Sickness” examines the deliberate preservation of emotional wounds. It addresses the tendency to revisit memories, choices and experiences that should have been allowed to settle, keeping them alive even when doing so causes further damage. The title suggests a disturbing reversal: instead of allowing time to heal an injury, repeatedly returning to it becomes a way of sustaining the pain. Clarke explains the EP’s philosophy in his own words: “The EP is an acknowledgement that the past is behind us. We spend too long lamenting what has been, rather than being mindful of the present and the joy it can bring. Then, when we finally realise time has slipped away, we begin mourning that as well. The constant mourning of time is a sickness.” The song runs 5:28.

Musical analysis

THE CRAWLING’s approach shows why death/doom remains such a powerful format for exploring grief and psychological struggle. Crushing heaviness, slow-burning atmosphere and guttural vocals give emotional experiences a physical presence; heaviness becomes a way of communicating the weight of memories and the exhaustion of repeated regret. The second track, “Bound to the Negative [Requiem]” (6:10), originally heard on the album All of This for Nothing, has been reconstructed as an entirely acoustic piece. Removed from the full weight of the band’s death/doom sound, it takes on another character while keeping the same emotional foundation and original conclusion. Clarke handled the mixing and mastering, and the artwork is by Redamaut.

Why listeners should pay attention

What We Leave Behind is concise in format but expansive in its central idea. The tragedy it describes is circular: time passes while we mourn what has gone, only for that lost time to become another thing we mourn. The EP does not suggest that loss can simply be dismissed or that grief follows an easy timetable. It confronts the point at which reflection becomes destructive, offering a theme that is both bleak and quietly urgent. Rather than treating darkness as an aesthetic alone, the band uses it to examine the thoughts that can hold people back.

Conclusion

With What We Leave Behind, THE CRAWLING present a release built around a difficult but recognisable idea: there is a difference between remembering the past and allowing it to dictate the present. Pairing a full-weight death/doom single with an acoustic reconstruction, the EP approaches one tension from two directions. It asks more of the listener than passive consumption, inviting us to consider how much of the present we are willing to sacrifice by refusing to let the past remain behind us.
