CELESTIAL SANCTUARY Announce Metal Blade Debut “Cradle Of The Rotten, Shrine To Those Most Foul”
UK Death Metal force return with a darker, broader and uncompromising vision of heavy music
By Tomi Perrakoski / Metal Madness Weekly

There comes a point in every band’s evolution when moving forward means looking inward — stripping away expectations, trends and outside influence to rediscover exactly what makes the band what it is.
For UK death metal force CELESTIAL SANCTUARY, that process has resulted in Cradle Of The Rotten, Shrine To Those Most Foul, a bold and uncompromising new album that sees the band refining their identity while refusing to conform to anyone else’s expectations.
The album will be released through Metal Blade Records on January 22, 2027, marking a major new chapter for the band.
Alongside the album announcement, CELESTIAL SANCTUARY have unveiled the new single “Lashed By Chain”, accompanied by a striking video that introduces the dark atmosphere, historical themes and uncompromising musical direction of the forthcoming record.
Refining the CELESTIAL SANCTUARY Identity
Cradle Of The Rotten, Shrine To Those Most Foul does not represent a departure from death metal.
Instead, CELESTIAL SANCTUARY have chosen to explore everything that exists around it.
The band describe the album as approximately 25% death metal and 75% everything else that forms their conception of heavy metal.
That philosophy allows the record to retain the violence and extremity at the heart of CELESTIAL SANCTUARY while opening the songwriting to a much broader spectrum of influences, dynamics and textures.
“Our intention this time around was to refine what actually this ‘CELESTIAL SANCTUARY thing’ is,” the band explain.
That approach meant filtering out trends, expectations and outside pressure and concentrating instead on what makes the band unique.
The result is a record that aims to sound unmistakably like CELESTIAL SANCTUARY rather than simply functioning as another conventional death metal release.
Across approximately 47 minutes, Cradle Of The Rotten, Shrine To Those Most Foul develops into a violent and expansive journey through death, folklore and the darkest corners of the band’s home territory.
A Dark History of Bury St. Edmunds
The album’s narrative foundation draws heavily from the history and legends surrounding Bury St. Edmunds.
Centuries of local mythology, atrocities, executions and dark folklore become the raw material for CELESTIAL SANCTUARY’s twisted storytelling.
The piercing and beheading of King Edmund, the spectral Black Shuck, the infamous Red Barn Murders, witch trials, the Sunken Bells of Dunwich, the Lantern Man and the many brutal executions associated with the region all contribute to the album’s dark historical landscape.
Rather than simply retelling these stories, CELESTIAL SANCTUARY transform them into something darker, more violent and deeply personal to their musical identity.
History becomes mythology.
Mythology becomes atmosphere.
And atmosphere becomes another weapon within the band’s sound.
“Lashed By Chain”
The album’s lead single, “Lashed By Chain”, provides an immediate statement of intent.
According to vocalist and guitarist Tomás Palmer-Cronin, it was the first song written for the album and helped establish the direction of the record that followed.
Musically, the track combines tight and rapid riffing with a brutal slam passage, sudden rhythmic changes and a prominent dual-guitar solo.
The song’s narrative follows a knight whose fate has become divided between wealth and warfare, with gold and iron representing opposing forces that ultimately shape his destiny.
Beneath the brutality is a story about survival, sacrifice, false hope and the cruelty of being forced to continue fighting when victory appears impossible.
There is no comfortable resolution.
There is no happy ending.
Rhythmic Violence and Expansive Songwriting
One of the defining characteristics of the new album is its approach to rhythm.
CELESTIAL SANCTUARY deliberately pushed themselves with syncopated riffs and sudden time-signature changes, creating a record that can shift between crushing heaviness and more expansive heavy metal structures without losing its intensity.
The result is a broader interpretation of what death metal can become when a band refuses to restrict itself to genre expectations.
The violence remains.
The heaviness remains.
But the songwriting is given considerably more space to breathe, evolve and surprise.
A Video Built to Feel Real
“Lashed By Chain” is accompanied by a video designed to feel real, gritty and tactile.
The band filmed the performance inside a 9th-century deconsecrated church built on a burial site in England’s first city, creating a visual environment that reflects the historical darkness surrounding the album.
Every element of the production was carefully considered, from the performance shots to the high-contrast lighting designed to complement the colours and atmosphere of the album artwork.
The visual world was further expanded through animation created with Ben Amos Cooper, designed to complement the album artwork by James Bousema while retaining its own identity.
The result connects the band’s performance, the artwork, the animation and the historical themes of the record into one unified visual experience.

A New Chapter
With Cradle Of The Rotten, Shrine To Those Most Foul, CELESTIAL SANCTUARY are not attempting to fit more comfortably inside the boundaries of death metal.
They are doing the opposite.
The band’s new record takes the brutality that established their identity and opens it up to a much wider interpretation of heavy music — one shaped by extreme metal, traditional heavy metal, folklore, history, atmosphere and an uncompromising approach to songwriting.
The result is an album built around one simple principle:
CELESTIAL SANCTUARY should sound like CELESTIAL SANCTUARY.
And on Cradle Of The Rotten, Shrine To Those Most Foul, they appear more determined than ever to make that identity entirely their own.
