Bay Area thrash metal legends DEATH ANGEL are back with new music. Their latest single, “The Never Was,” arrives alongside an official lyric visualizer and marks another chapter in the band’s remarkable four-decade career. With European and Australian touring dates approaching, their annual holiday shows returning, and the Act III anniversary tour continuing, DEATH ANGEL show no signs of slowing down.
“The Never Was” – A New Attack of Bay Area Thrash
DEATH ANGEL have unleashed “The Never Was,” a new single that captures the speed, precision and aggression that have defined the band’s sound for more than four decades.
Accompanied by an official lyric visualizer, the track delivers another dose of uncompromising thrash metal from one of the most enduring names to emerge from the legendary Bay Area scene.
Vocalist Mark Osegueda explains the inspiration behind the song, describing it as a response to people whose self-centred behaviour leads them to turn conversations, tragedies, achievements and even someone else’s death into opportunities to glorify themselves.
Osegueda draws a direct connection between the song’s attitude and Carly Simon’s classic “You’re So Vain,” describing “The Never Was” as its thrash metal counterpart.
The vocalist also emphasises the frustration behind the lyrics: the people being criticised often appear completely unaware of how their behaviour affects everyone around them.
The result is an angry musical statement aimed at arrogance, self-absorption and the endless need for attention.
“Angry music!” is how Osegueda sums up the track.

DEATH ANGEL – Four Decades of Bay Area Thrash Metal
Formed in 1982 in Daly City, California, DEATH ANGEL emerged as one of the vital forces of the legendary Bay Area thrash metal movement.
Initially rising as teenage musicians, the band quickly developed a reputation for blistering speed, technical precision, fearless songwriting and intense live performances.
The original formation brought together cousins Rob Cavestany on guitar, Dennis Pepa on bass and Andy Galeon on drums, alongside vocalist Mark Osegueda and guitarist Gus Pepa.
The band began building its reputation in local clubs before breaking onto the international stage with its 1987 debut album, The Ultra-Violence. Recorded when drummer Andy Galeon was just 14 years old, the record immediately distinguished DEATH ANGEL within the Bay Area scene through its complex arrangements and explosive energy.
Their 1988 follow-up, Frolic Through the Park, featured the breakout single “Bored,” which received MTV exposure and helped bring the band to a wider audience. DEATH ANGEL also hosted Headbangers Ball, further strengthening their connection with the emerging metal generation.
In 1990, the band released Act III through Geffen Records. The album introduced a more dynamic and melodic dimension while retaining the intensity of their thrash metal foundations. With MTV exposure for “Seemingly Endless Time” and “A Room With a View,” alongside coverage in People magazine, the album established DEATH ANGEL as one of the genre’s most musically adventurous acts.
The Reunion and a New Era
After reuniting in 2001, DEATH ANGEL entered a powerful second chapter.
Rather than relying on nostalgia, the band continued to release new material, combining classic Bay Area aggression with sharpened songwriting and modern production.
Their post-reunion discography includes:
• The Art of Dying (2004)
• Killing Season (2008)
• Relentless Retribution (2010)
• The Dream Calls for Blood (2013)
• The Evil Divide (2016)
• Humanicide (2019)
Across these albums, intricate riff craftsmanship, blistering tempos and socially aware lyricism became defining elements of the band’s modern era.
The 2019 album Humanicide earned DEATH ANGEL a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance, further cementing their position among contemporary thrash metal’s most respected acts.
New Music in 2025 – “Wrath (Bring Fire)” and “Cult of the Used”
In 2025, DEATH ANGEL unveiled two standalone singles, marking their first new material in several years and signalling the next phase of their evolution.
“Wrath (Bring Fire)” delivered a high-velocity assault rooted in classic Bay Area ferocity.
“Cult of the Used” followed with a socially charged approach driven by precision riffing, thunderous rhythms and commanding vocals.
Together, the two releases reaffirmed the band’s creative momentum and uncompromising intensity.
The arrival of “The Never Was” continues that momentum, demonstrating that DEATH ANGEL remain committed to creating new music rather than simply revisiting their celebrated past.
A Formidable and Long-Standing Lineup
The current DEATH ANGEL lineup consists of:
• Mark Osegueda – Vocals
• Rob Cavestany – Guitar
• Ted Aguilar – Guitar
• Damien Sisson – Bass
• Will Carroll – Drums
This lineup has remained intact for nearly two decades, forming one of the most stable and formidable configurations in the band’s history.
That longevity translates into the live environment, where DEATH ANGEL continue to tour extensively across North America, Europe, South America, Asia and Australia.
Their performances at major festivals and headlining club and theatre shows have maintained their reputation as one of thrash metal’s most electrifying live acts.
The Legacy Continues
From their beginnings in the Bay Area underground to international recognition, Grammy-nominated releases and anniversary tours across multiple continents, DEATH ANGEL have built a career defined by musical ambition and consistency.
Their return with “The Never Was” is another reminder that the band’s creative drive remains very much alive.
With the Act III anniversary tour continuing, European and Australian performances ahead, and the annual holiday shows returning, DEATH ANGEL have plenty planned for fans around the world.
More than four decades after their formation, the Bay Area thrash veterans remain a powerful force on the international metal scene.
